Walking, Cycling and Activites in Appleby

Appleby lies at the heart of the Eden Valley.  The town is an excellent centre for exploring the varied surrounding landscape on foot, bicycle, car or horseback.

The Dales Highway, The Westmorland Way, Lady Anne's Way, and The Pennine Way are all long distance walking routes in and around Appleby. The Pennine Way celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2015.

The town is on the North Pennine and the Sea-to-Sea cycle route. Many of the quiet country roads are part of the National Cycle Network. Most of the charming villages in the area offer resting places and refreshment to the traveller.

Appleby Tourist Information Centre provides comprehensive information on walking and cycling routes in Eden and the North Pennines.

Other Activities

For the more energetic there is an indoor swimming pool at the Leisure Centre which also has a gym. There's also a fully equipped Sports Centre. Visitors are welcome to play tennis, squash and bowls at the local clubs.

The 18 hole golf course is unsurpassed for the beauty of its scenery.  The cricket ground, between the river and the church, is the essence of rural England. The River Eden is renowned for its trout fishing and the tranquil beauty of the riverside walks.
