Current road works and improvements

Current and upcoming road works in Cumbria are available on the Westmorland and Furness website.

Kirkstone Pass works

The Safer Roads Team at Westmorland and Furness Council would like to thank local businesses, residents and visitors for their understanding, support and patience during their ongoing efforts to improve the safety of Kirkstone Pass.

Heavy snowfalls in December followed by severe storms in January and February have meant they have experienced delays to planned work overall on the route, which was closed to all vehicles during the worst of the recent weather.  The Council has recently advised the Community Stakeholder Group that a further 2-week closure in April is required to complete resurfacing work on the North side of the Pass.  The next closure will take place from the 16 - 30 April 2024.

During the next full closure, the road will undergo a complete closure which means that vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists are not permitted to access the area.  During the closure, please do not attempt to access the work site.  As part of the commitment to maintaining a secure environment, barriers will be placed on the site to ensure the safety of the public.

The Safer Roads Team at Westmorland and Furness Council would like to thank the community for their continued support and patience while improvements are made to the highway network and sincerely apologise for any disruptions.

For more information and to see the next phases, please visit the Safer Roads website.
