The Pennine Journey

This is a long-distance footpath of 247 miles (398 km).  53 miles are within Eden, includingGarrigill photo courtesy of the Cumbria Photo library parts of the Eden Valley and Pennines.

The footpath is based upon a circular walk which Alfred Wainwright undertook in 1938, setting off from Settle to Hadrian's Wall and back. The following year he wrote about his 'Pennine Journey' which was published in 1986.

The route starts from Settle and onto Swaledale and the highest public house in England, the Tan Hill Inn.  It then makes it way to Bowes, Middleton-in-Teesdale and onto Hexham.  It follows Hadrian's Wall and then heads south along the River South Tyne to Alston before climbing over the shoulder of Cross Fell.  The Eden Valley is followed to its source before the route crosses over to the River Rawthey, into Dentdale and Ingleton before the journey ends back in Settle.
