The Miller's Way
The Millers Way is a 51 mile (82km) walk between Kendal and Carlisle which runs through Eden.
It was created by Carr's Breadmaker to commemorate the company's 175th anniversary. The route is based on the original journey made by Quaker Miller Jonathan Dodgson Carr (1806 - 1884). He founded the Carr's flour, bread and biscuit dynasty in Carlisle on June 29 1831 after leaving his home town of Kendal.
As a tribute, The Miller's Way was devised. The route follows the trek that he took in 1831, by foot and horse drawn carriage, from Kendal to Carlisle.
The route gives a taste of the Shap Fells, the Howgills, the Pennines and the Eden Valley and is a generally low-level route with the total ascent on the route 1418m (4652ft) and the highest point at 443m (1453ft).
The walk takes in Shap Memorial, Bampton Grange, Lowther Castle, Penrith, Plumpton Foot and Wreay, before finishing in Carlisle.
