Pennine Way

Walk the backbone of England from the Peak District to the Scottish Borders on England's firstHigh Cup Nick photo by Val Corbett National Trail.

With a combined ascent that exceeds the height of Mount Everest, the Pennine Way is arguably the most challenging National Trail in England and the route is recommended for experienced walkers

The long distance route follows the Pennine mountain range for 268 miles (431km) from Edale in the Peak District to Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders. You can walk short sections of the route in Eden with walks from Garrigill and Dufton.

The 24th April 2025 marked the 60th anniversary of the official opening of The Pennine Way - England’s first National Trail.

Visit the National Trails website for more information.

Alternative Pennine Way

Although an old route, now out of print The Alternative Pennine Way is a rather lower level route than the Pennine Way, which passes through attractive villages and points of interest. The Way descends from the high fells to reach the River Tees.  It then crosses the fells to High Cup, Great Dunfell and Cross Fell and descends to Alston to reach the Northumberland National Park and Hadrian's Wall.
