Description

ALL AGES AND LEVELS OF EXPERIENCE ARE WELCOME!

We will perform Handel's 'Saul' Carlisle Cathedral on Saturday 17th April 2027 at 7.30pm.  Conductor: John Butt OBE FBA FRSE.  Accompanied by a professional orchestra and soloists.

John Butt is the Music Director and Conductor for the 2026-2027 Season. John's specialism is music from the Baroque period. As Musical Director of the Dunedin Consort he has performed at the Proms and all over the UK and abroad. John has an engaging sense of humour. At the end of the 'Come and Sing Handel!' day, which John recently led for Cumbria Singers, one of the singers remarked: 'Laughing and singing- a wonderful combination'.

'Saul' is the most accomplished of Handel's oratorios. It tells the tragic story of Saul's relationship with David, who killed Goliath and went on to slay thousands of Saul's enemies. The music reflects the emotional intensity of Saul and David's relationship and the momentous events which eventually led to Saul's death.

Cumbria Singers find that the Music Director's professional leadership helps them to improve their vocal skills, confidence and self esteem.  The splendid historical setting of Carlisle Cathedral provides the appropriate context to compliment the themes of the choral works.
