Description

Kirkby Stephen and District Walkers are Welcome Walk Programme late Spring 2024.  All our walks take 1 to 1.5 hours 2/3 miles.  Suggested donation £1.   

During May National Walking Month we will be programming Dawdle walks in line with Walkers are Welcome Themed Events celebrating a named walk.  As some of these routes are linear, there will be a bit of car jiggling.

 

Thursday 2nd May - Lady Anne’s Way Aisgill to Boggle Green*

Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am. Dawdles Walk with car share 7.6 miles.  During May National Walking Month we will be programming walks in line with Walkers are Welcome Themed Events celebrating a named walk.  A beautiful short linear section of this trail on the ancient Highway taking in Hellgill Force, The Watercut sculpture mainly downhill between Wild Boar Fell and Mallerstang Edge. Bring a snack to stop on route.

 

Friday 3rd May - Swindale Valley*

Meet at Christian Head Car Park 9:30am.  Legstretcher Walk with car share 24 miles. Celebrating Shap Outdoor Festival.  A 4.6 mile walk around this special valley like stepping back in time, jointly managed by the RSPB and United Utilities. 90 ascent, approximately 2hrs. 15 mins.  Optional refreshments in Shap. Alternative meet point Swindale car park 10:15am.

 

Thursday 9th May - Dawdles Walk, Lakes Field Walk by John Strutt Conservation Foundation

Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.  A brisk walk to Hartley village and a slower walk around this relatively new path part of the Nature Reserve with lakes, wild foul, deer and wild flowers. Return walk to Kirkby Stephen for optional refreshment stop. Please note there can be standing water after rain.

 

Thursday 16th May - Pennine Journey to Nateby*

Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.  Dawdles Walk with car share 1.5 miles.  This is basically a charming walk from Kirkby Stephen to Nateby along ancient lanes.  We will arrange for a refeshment stop at the Black Bull, Nateby.

 

Thursday 23rd May - Coast to Coast Waitby to Kirkby Stephen

Meet The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.  Dawdles Walk with car share 2 miles.This week is a short section of the Coast to Coast from Waitby just as Coast to Coasters arrive into the town.  Optional refreshments in Kirkby Stephen.

 

Thursday 30th May - Kirkby Stephen Poetry Path, Dawdles Walk*

Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.  Twelve short poems, written by poet Meg Peacocke, carved by lettering artist Pip Hall on blocks of stone installed at intervals either side of the River Eden. A year in the life of a hill farmer’.  Allow extra time to read the poems together.  Optional refreshments back in the town.

 

Thursday 6th June - Piper Hole Goat Farm and Haymeadows

Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.  Dawdles Walk with car share 5.5 miles.  Taking advantage of the best time of year for local haymeadows, we will visit Piper Hole Coronation Meadow and the goat farm for a guided tour with owner Frank.  Refreshments will be included.

 

Friday 7th June - Ewbank Scar

Meet at Christian Head car park 9:30am.  Legstretch walk.  This charming walk of 6 miles explores the SSSI designated Ewbank Scar and countryside less well known. 1049 ft ascent, approximately 3 hrs.

 

Thursday 13th June - Dawdles Walk, Owen’s Farm, Sandwath

Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.  Walking the medieval green lanes to Sandwath for refreshments at Owen’s Farm.  Returning to Kirkby Stephen via Stobars and Bloody Bones Lanes.

 

Thursday 20th June - Augill Pasture Nature Reserve, Stainmore

Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.  Dawdles Walk with car share 5.4 miles.  This is a small reserve with lovely wild flowers and views set next to an old smelting mill site.  A short walk up and down hill so we will go slower.  Optional refreshments at Brough Castle Ice Cream Parlour on the way back.

 

Thursday 27th June - New Ravenstonedale Walk from the Fat Lamb

Meet at The Cloisters, Kirkby Stephen 10:30am.  Dawdles Walk with car share 5 miles.  Members familiar with Ravenstonedale will lead us on a new walk.  Optional refreshments in the Fat Lamb after our walk.

Dawdles walks take around an hour unless otherwise stated, 2/3 miles.  We will go whatever the weather - please wear suitable clothing and footwear for the day – we will adapt walks when essential. Legstretcher walks, allow for a morning out 1st Friday once a month. Next Legstretcher Walk Friday 5th July.

Where there is a car share, allow for extra time to reach destinations and return. We usually find optional refreshments after our walks.  Everyone welcome, suggested donation £1 per walk towards expenses.
We will substitute the walk leader if not available, back marker added on the day as needed. We carry Public Liability Insurance.
