Warcop Rushbearing 2027

Warcop Rushbearing is an annual traditional village festival held in Warcop, Cumbria, on or around Saint Peter's Day (June 29) at St Columba's Church, Warcop.

Description

Historically, villagers gathered fresh rushes to strew on cold earthen church floors for insulation and cleanliness. Even after floors were flagged with stone in the 18th century, the custom evolved into a festive celebration.

Children process through the village carrying intricate floral crowns and crosses woven from rushes. These floral crowns and rush crosses are placed inside St Columba's Church and displayed until the following year.
