Length: 13.3km (8.2 miles) with 220m (722ft) of ascent/
Time: 5.5 hours/
A moderate graded walk that begins at Lowther Castle, and continues on through the charming village of Askham and onto open moorland with its panoramic views.
This varied moderate-level route wanders through the woodland and parkland of Lowther Castle, along the banks of the river Lowther, up to the open fells and through the charming village of Askham with its classic village green and picturesque cottages. From the prehistoric Cop Stone on Askham Fell to stories of the Yellow Earl, this walk is steeped in local history.
The route takes us on a mixture of rough tracks, across open fell and over stiles. The paths are generally good but there are some sections that are stony and others that will be muddy in poor weather.
Participants will need to dress appropriately for the terrain and weather and bring a packed lunch.
