Ullswater Yacht Club’s biggest event of the year, the annual two-day long-distance event for the highly-prized Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy.

Description

The celebration regatta was established in 1963 as a tribute to Lord Norman Birkett who died just two days after a speech in the House of Lord which was successful in preventing Ullswater becoming a reservoir. The club has held the iconic round-the-island race, which more attracts an entry of more than 200 boats, in honour of the ‘Saviour of Ullswater’ ever since. The Festival of Sailing attracts racers of all ages and abilities from across the country in a range of different boats and the quest of the Holy Grail of a Birkett win has seen the popularity of the event soar.

A highlight of the weekend is a special Ullswater Steamers Birkett Cruise which takes place on the Saturday of the event. Passengers can get up-close to the action as the steamer follows the racers down the lake. Book directly with Ullswater 'Steamers.'
