Description

Pull up a seat by the fire and spend an evening embracing the arrival of winter with spine-tingling music and spellbinding wintery tales.

Light in the Darkness is a collection of songs celebrating winter in all its raw beauty, from Shakespeare’s unsettling Blow, blow, thou winter wind to the joyous El Mochilon, a Colombian song about bringing coffee and cinnamon to your beloved in the mountains by moonlight.

Performed in four-part harmony by the singers of the Cumbrian Tatie Pot collective, the music takes us on a journey through winters around the world, through the shadows of the boreal forest, into the peculiar stillness of the midwinter solstice. They conjure that unique wintery pleasure of coming in out of the cold to a place of warmth and light and human connection.

Storyteller Jessie McMeekin brings wintery folk tales from around Northern Europe: swan maidens from the arctic circle, a Welsh mystery of the missing sun-king and, of course, a visit from Scotland’s own Queen of Winter: the Cailleach. Spinning a yarn between the songs, the members of Tatie Pot remind us that as humans we have faced tens of thousands of winters by coming together, singing songs, telling stories and connecting with each other.

Come and be drawn into a world of imagination and mystery, become part of our community conjured up through the power of story, music and song.
