Shap Standing Stones

Shap, Penrith, CA10 3QG.

Today, the principal feature is the Goggleby Stone, a 12 ton monolith, which was re-erected in 1975 after it had fallen - some 3500 years after first being set on end. South of Shap village, is Kemp Howe stone circle which has been cut in two by the West Coast Main Line Railway, and overshadowed by the Corus Shapfell lime works. Only six stones now remain, with others probably under the railway embankment. This circle used to have an avenue of stones leading from it to a barrow in the NNW. Some of these avenue stones can still be seen today. Just to the west of Shap are dotted a collection of standing stones which are the remains of this avenue, one being the Goggleby Stone. Three other standing stones are marked on the OS map in this area.
