    Brough Farmers' Market

    Brough Farmers' Market is held on the third Saturday of every month, in the Memorial Hall in Brough (Brough-under-Stainmore to give it it's full name), Cumbria. It is almost unique among Farmers' markets in that it is entirely under cover and thus protected from the weather, though there may be extra stalls outside including our vegetable seller who actually prefers to be outside.  Brough Farmers' Market is a certified member of FARMA (the national Farmers' Retail & Markets Association).

  • Heritage Open Days: Appleby Grammar School Library

    After four centuries in the town centre, where its pupils included the father and brothers of President George Washington, the school moved in 1887 on a site provided by the Tuftons.  What was the assembly hall of the Victorian rebuild now serves as the library for today's comprehensive, and houses many momentos of the old school. It is an impressive room well worth a visit.  No booking required.

  • Heritage Open Days: Battlebarrow House

    Members of the Heelis family, who served as agents for the Tuftons, built several houses for themselves at viewpoints around the town in the 19th century, this being one of them. Beatrix Potter married William Heelis and visited Battlebarrow.  This is a fine, unspoilt example of a 19th century home retaining Victorian character.

    This spacious riverbank villa with it's extensive walled garden, built in the shadow of Appleby Castle, reflects the quiet prosperity of Appleby in the 18th century, when it was built for the Hill family.  Castle Bank is a large old house situated on the hill running down from the grounds of Appleby Castle to the River Eden, alongside Jubilee Bridge. The house stands in approximately 2 acres of garden, including a substantial walled garden containing a herbaceous border, fruit trees and a sandstone windowless building that was probably once an apple store.

  • Heritage Open Days: Guided tour of Appleby historic town

    A blue badge guided tour of the many historic buildings and monuments in Appleby town centre. Appleby has 147 listed buildings within one square mile and has links to George Washington, Earl Grey, Lady Anne Clifford and William Pitt the Younger.  The market town of Appleby in Westmorland retains its old world charm and its main street, described by many as one of the finest in England, will transport you back to Medieval England.    For several centuries Appleby was the county town of Westmorland and this is reflected in the broad avenue of Boroughgate that sweeps from St Lawrence’s Church uphill to the Castle.

    In 1653 Lady Anne endowed almshouses, with a courtyard, chapel and garden space overlooking the river, to provide homes for ageing ladies on their own, whether widowed or single.  17th Century almshouses continued to be homes for retired gentlewomen. Managed by a trust, whose chairman is descended from the original benefactor.

  • Heritage Open Days: St Lawrence’s Church

    This Norman foundation was refurbished in the 1650's by Lady Anne Clifford of Appleby Castle; she and her mother were buried there. The main body of the church is a late Victorian makeover.  The church is at the lower end of Boroughgate beyond the cloisters which were designed by Sir Robert Smirke in 1811.
