    Last year over 40 Northern Nurseries and Cumbrian Food Producers came to the annual Plant and Food Fair at Hutton-in-the-Forest. As well as a strong showing of perennials, there will be a great range of specialist nurseries, including primula, rose, peony and rhododendron growers and a range of alpine, herb, tree and shrub nurseries.  There will also be a wide range of food stalls, all delicious, including locally reared meat, smoked fish, cheeses, breads, cakes, preserves and wine.  Definitely one of the highlights of the season, Hutton-in-the-Forest Plant and Food Fair is a superb day out for all the family..

    Appleby Horse Fair

    A traditional, informal gathering of gypsies and travellers - lively atmosphere with plenty to see - horses being washed in river, raced down street, stalls etc.  The Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers which takes place on the first week in June, from Thursday to the following Wednesday, but this is essentially a weekend event the main days being the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Appleby Fair is unique in Europe and, as well as attracting around 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, over 30,000 other visitors attend the Fair, with Sunday being the traditional main visitors’ day.  **Please note: This is not an organised event.**  Visitors attend at their own risk.  More information is available from Appleby TIC - 017683 51177 or via www.applebyfair.org.

    Gilbert and Sullivan: Pirates of Penzance by Illyria

    Open air performance of Pirates of Penzance by Illyria in the grounds of Hutton in the Forest.  In 2011 Illyria raised the bar for the major UK open-air touring theatre companies by becoming the first and only one to add Opera to its regular season.  Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular comic opera is about Frederick, an apprentice pirate, born on 29th February, who quits the Pirate ship and falls in love with girl on land - until he learns he is contracted to the pirates until his 21st BIRTHDAY, not his 21st year. Being a steadfast Slave Of Duty, what is he to do? To denounce his piratical friends to the authorities? Or to postpone his marriage until he is 84?   The show is packed with laughter, romance and a ship-full of memorable lyrics such as "To be a Pirate King!"; "Modern Major General" and "A Policeman's Lot is Not a Happy One".

    The Brough Agricultural Society is holding its 2014 Show on Thursday 21st August 2014 in the Show Field, Kaber, Kirkby Stephen.  The Show, a traditional one, has classes for Fell, Dales, Shetland, Piebald Coloured Ponies, Veteran Horses, Riding Ponies and Mounted Fancy Dress. Marathon and Obstacle Driving competitions are also held.  Sheep classes include Swaledale, Rough Fell, Blackfaced, Mule and Blue Faced Leicester, Texel, Herdwick, Beltex, Suffolk and Lleyn sheep together with a Young Handler competition which is a qualifier for the Cumbria Young Sheep Handler.  The Horticultural Classes are for Vegetables, Flowers, Floral Art, a Co-Operative Effort, Confectionery, Art Classes, Handicrafts and Photography.

    Entries open from February 1st 2014.  1 mile swim in Ullswater - England's most beautiful lake. 38 miles cycle - including the Kirkstone Pass. 9 miles run up Helvellyn - 3118 feet (England's 3rd highest peak).....(only 75 feet less than the highest). The only UK based race in Triathlete Europe's Top 10 Toughest Races on the Planet.  Anyone want to argue?This is a very challenging race, but I think if you speak to anyone that has done it you will be told it is well worth the effort. However, I do recommend you check out the race route link before deciding.  If you don't already know, the area is fabulous and well worth making a weekend visit for the race.

    The Penrith Triathlon will take place on Sunday 21 September 2014, from Penrith Leisure Centre. The Triathlon is a British Triathlon registered sprint event which includes:  Swim 400 metres - Penrith Leisure Centre pool swim  Cycle 23 kilometres - on open roads  Run 5 kilometres - on adjacent fields The event is open to persons aged 18 years and over on race day, and in recent years has successfully involved beginners to the sport to more experienced athletes.
