    Saturday 7th December is our annual one day Santa event at Kirkby Stephen East.  We do not operate a booking system and charge £10 per child with an accompanying adult free. Additional adults are welcome at £4 each.  First train 10:30 and will be steam hauled (subject to locomotive fitness to run).  Train travels up the track (1/4 mile) and the children are then taken to meet Santa in his on board grotto.

    Don’t just take our word for it…  Santa Specials at South Tynedale Railway really are special, but don’t just take our word for it!  A visitor from Carlisle said, “It’s become a family tradition now and we hope to come for many years to come.”  And SB from Newcastle said, “Had such a lovely day out, couldn’t have faulted it one bit.”  So, what happens at a Santa Special? Well, you’ll be greeted by our lovely platform Elves who will direct you to our ticket office on platform 1 to collect your tickets and then help you to board your train. You’ll be able to join in with some carol singing on your journey* and we will give you a spotter sheet with lots of things to look for as you travel through the wintry North Pennines behind one of our heritage steam locos.  When you return to Alston, our Chief Elf will be there to lead you to Santa’s Grotto and while you wait your turn to see the famous man in red there will be crafts to keep you busy and seasonal refreshments to warm you up and it’s all included in your ticket price!  Saturdays and Sundays in December: 7 and 8 December  14 and 15 December  21 and 22 December 2018 prices!  We know how expensive Christmas is so we have kept our ticket prices the same as 2018.

    Appleby Horse Fair 2020

    A traditional, informal gathering of Gypsies and Travellers - lively atmosphere with plenty to see - horses being washed in river, raced down street, stalls etc.  Appleby Horse Fair takes place on the first week in June from Thursday to the following Wednesday, but it is essentially a weekend event with the main days being Friday, Saturday and Sunday.     Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy 2020

    The 2020 Lord Birkett Memorial Trophy will be held over the weekend of 4th and 5th of July at Ullswater Yacht Club.  The quest for the 'Holy Grail' of a Birkett win attracts keen sailors from national champions to novices from all over the country in a wide range of different boats all racing the full length of Ullswater and back on both days. The unique annual race was established in 1963 in memory of Lord Norman Birkett who successfully defended the right of public access to Ullswater which was threatened with reservoir status in the early 1960s. He spoke in the House of Lords in 1962 of the importance of retaining Ullswater's natural beauty for all, but sadly died shortly afterwards and the race has been held annually in honour of the 'Saviour of Ullswater'.

    The Brough Agricultural Society is holding its 2020 Show on Thursday 20th August, so, put it in your diaries in the Show Field, Kaber, Kirkby Stephen.  The Show, a traditional one, has classes for Fell, Dales, Shetland, Piebald Coloured Ponies, Veteran Horses, Riding Ponies and Mounted Fancy Dress. Marathon and Obstacle Driving competitions are also held.  Sheep classes include Swaledale, Rough Fell, Blackfaced, Mule and Blue Faced Leicester, Texel, Herdwick, Beltex, Suffolk and Lleyn sheep together with a Young Handler competition which is a qualifier for the Cumbria Young Sheep Handler.  The Horticultural Classes are for Vegetables, Flowers, Floral Art, a Co-Operative Effort, Confectionery, Art Classes, Handicrafts and Photography.
