  • The Winter Droving

    The Winter Droving

The popular Winter Droving in Penrith will take place on the 15th November in 2014 and organisers Eden Arts have announced that this year the day long celebration will feature a new collaboration with Taste Cumbria.  The Winter Droving has become a big hit in the Cumbrian calendar providing a unique signature event in Penrith.  Featuring street entertainment, music, food, crafts, rural games, a market and all topped off with a spectacular fire and lantern procession attendances have risen dramatically since the inaugural event two years ago.  This year over 10,000 people are expected to attend.  The Winter Droving is a rural celebration based on the ancient tradition of droving animals to markets, often these days would also see some fun and games in the market town as farmers from outlying farms and drovers let their hair down a little!  The modern Winter Droving is an all day event filling the streets of Penrith with activity.  As well as the new food market there will be more fun and games and entertainment throughout the day with some surprises too.  Each Winter Droving has featured something new, be that a giant helter skelter or beautifully crafted giant animal lanterns or outstanding musicians from around Cumbria and further afield, 2014 will see more of the same.  The Winter Droving is supported by Eden District Council and in 2013 had the backing of the local Business Improvement District (BID), the Pride in Penrith Lottery and Penrith Partnership as well as a raft of support from local businesses.  (Photo courtesy of John Burrows Photography).
