    Eden Valley Epic Cycle Sportive

    The 2015 Eden Valley Epic will take place place from Penrith Leisure Centre on March 22nd 2015. The route is just short of 60 miles and starts from Penrith Leisure Centre in Cumbria.  The route initially heads South towards Orton village before looping North to Appleby in Westmorland for the half way food stop.Following the food stop the homeward leg then weaves it's way through fantastic cycling lanes, via Dufton, Milburn and Langwathby.

    The 17th Kirkby Stephen and Brough Classic Commercial Vehicle Rally will be held over Easter Weekend, Saturday and Sunday 4th and 5th April 2015.  The rally, which is free to both public and exhibitors, has about 250 examples of commercial working vehicles from the last century displayed on about 7 site locations in the 2 towns. All locations, which can be as much as 5 miles apart, are connected by a free regular classic bus and coach service.

    Hutton in the Forest Plant and Food Fair

    There are over 40 Northern Nurseries and Cumbrian Food Producers coming to the annual Plant and Food Fair at Hutton-in-the-Forest on 17th May.  As well as a strong showing of perennials, there will be a great range of specialist nurseries, including primula, rose, peony and rhododendron growers and a range of alpine, herb, tree and shrub nurseries.  It will be the perfect time to get planting!   There will also be a wide range of food stalls, all delicious, including locally reared meat, yogurts, cheeses, breads, cakes, preserves and wine.  The admission charge of just £5 - children free – includes access to the extensive gardens and grounds including the Walled Garden, terraces and topiary, Low Garden with its ponds and cascades and the Woodland Walk as well as talks from visiting experts and a garden tour with Hutton’s own Head Gardener. Delicious lunches and refreshments are also on offer at the atmospheric Cloisters Tearoom.   Definitely one of the highlights of the season, Hutton-in-the-Forest Plant and Food Fair is a superb day out for all the family.

    Ullswater Challenge

    This event explores the stunning Ullswater valley by boat and on foot, and allows you to experience some of the most beautiful locations whilst challenging yourself on a rewarding and exciting event.  Organised in conjunction with Lake District professional outdoor activity providers Distant Horizons, this challenge looks to test your ability whilst also raising money for the Great North Air Ambulance Service.   This Challenge involves:  Paddling a 12km circuit on Ullswater, England's second largest lake  Scaling Helvellyn, one of the highest mountains in England, via exciting scrambles on the famous Striding and Swirral edges. Ascent - 810m, Distance - 11.5km  Paddling back across Ullswater  All this is to be completed in order for you to fulfill the challenge.  Not an easy undertaking but one that will see you push yourself to the limit and raise money for a great cause at the same time.  *All technical equipment is provided including boats, buoyancy aids and paddles.

  • Appleby Horse Fair

    Appleby Horse Fair

    A traditional, informal gathering of Gypsies and Travellers - lively atmosphere with plenty to see - horses being washed in river, raced down street, stalls etc.  The Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers which takes place on the first week in June, from Thursday to the following Wednesday, but this is essentially a weekend event the main days being the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The Horse Fair has taken place since the reign of James II, who granted a Royal charter in 1685 allowing a horse fair "near to the River Eden."  Appleby Fair is unique in Europe and, as well as attracting around 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, over 30,000 other visitors attend the Fair, with Sunday being the traditional main visitors’ day.  More information is available from Appleby TIC - 017683 51177 or via www.applebyfair.org**Please note: This is not an organised event.**  Visitors attend at their own risk.

    Police Sport UK Triathlon Championships 2015

    After a successful race in 2014, Sport in Action is pleased to host the PSUK Standard Distance Triathlon Championships for 2015 at Park Foot Camping and Caravan Park, Pooley Bridge, Ullswaterat 12:30pm on Friday 10th July.  The event uses the same course as the AW Jenkinson Ullswater Triathlon, being held the following day.  The race will feature a 1500mtr open water swim in one of the UK’s most beautiful open water swimming arenas, Lake Ullswater. This is followed by a 40k undulating cycle ride on relatively quiet country roads via Askham, The Lowther Estate and Eamont Bridge before a final, flat multi lap and varied terrain run with stunning views of the local area.  The venue is one of the largest camping and caravanning sites on the shores of Ullswater with excellent family facilities, bar, restaurant, play parks etc.

    The Merchant of Venice - Live from the RSC

    The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is continuing it’s collaboration with Picturehouse Entertainment in 2015 on ‘Live from Stratford-upon-Avon’, a programme to screen its productions live from Shakespeare’s hometown.  The Merchant of Venice will be directed by Polly Findlay, in her first Shakespeare production for the RSC.  Polly’s production of Arden of Faversham currently plays in the Swan Theatre as part of ‘The Roaring Girls’ season. She has directed Protest Song at The Shed at the National Theatre and will direct Treasure Island at the National Theatre at the end of 2014.  In the melting pot of Venice, trade is God.

    The North West Driving Club was founded in 1966 to foster good horsemanship and friendship amongst all drivers of harnessed horses and ponies in the North West of the UK. Marathon and Obstacle Driving competitions are also held.  Sheep classes include Swaledale, Rough Fell, Blackfaced, Mule and Blue Faced Leicester, Texel, Herdwick, Beltex, Suffolk and Lleyn sheep together with a Young Handler competition which is a qualifier for the Cumbria Young Sheep Handler.  The Horticultural Classes are for Vegetables, Flowers, Floral Art, a Co-Operative Effort, Confectionery, Art Classes, Handicrafts and Photography.

    The 2015 Penrith Triathlon will take place on Sunday 20 September 2015, from Penrith Leisure Centre.  The Triathlon is a British Triathlon registered sprint event which includes:      Swim 400 metres - Penrith Leisure Centre pool swim      Cycle 23 kilometres - on open roads      Run 5 kilometres - on adjacent fields  Who was the triathlon event open to?  The event is open to persons aged 18 years and over on race day, and in recent years has successfully involved beginners to the sport to more experienced athletes.     A right rural gathering..................with rural games such as tug of war and hay bale racing to win the Drovers Cup, as well as fantastic array of street entertainment.  Then as night falls welcome the mystical masked procession...featuring fire, music, mayhem and animals aplenty, concluding with a spectacular finale in Great Dockray.  The Winter Droving has quickly established itself as a key event in the Cumbrian calendar, attracting thousands of people from all over the north.  There are lots of opportunities to join in (carry a torch in the procession or enter a team into the Drovers Cup) or to simply stand around gawping and feeding your face and maybe throw a few coconuts about!!!  Join the Herd for a spectacular celebration of winter and Penrith’s agricultural heritage – illuminating Penrith with fire, animation, music and merriment.  The Winter Droving is organised by Eden Arts with the support of Eden District Council, Arts Council England, Cumbria County Council, Penrith Bid, Penrith Lottery, and is sponsored by a number of local businesses.  (Photo courtesy of John Burrows Photography).
