    Three days of Halloween fun culminating in super scary Friday, (with a midnight ghost walk in the gardens)! From Wednesday the 29th to Friday 31st the Courtyard will be decorated in traditional halloween style, with games, competitions, and workshops in the stables.  On Friday 31st we have all our special events and entertainments in the courtyard and gardens.   • The Winter Droving

    The Winter Droving

    A right rural gathering, including a traditional Cumbrian market featuring local food and drink (the food village this year is brought together by Taste Cumbria).  There are rural games such as tug of war and hay bale racing to win the Drovers Cup (currently held by the Penrith Fire Brigade) as well as fantastic array of street entertainment.  Then as night falls welcome the mystical masked procession...featuring fire, music, mayhem and animals aplenty, concluding with a spectacular finale in Great Dockray.  Now in its third year the Winter Droving has quickly established itself as a key event in the Cumbrian calendar, attracting thousands of people from all over the north.  There are lots of opportunities to join in (carry a torch in the procession or enter a team into the Drovers Cup) or to simply stand around gawping and feeding your face and maybe throw a few coconuts about!!!  Join the Herd for a spectacular celebration of winter and Penrith’s agricultural heritage – illuminating Penrith with fire, animation, music and merriment.  The Winter Droving is organised by Eden Arts with the support of Eden District Council, Arts Council England, Cumbria County Council, Penrith Bid, Penrith Lottery, and is sponsored by a number of local businesses.  (Photo courtesy of John Burrows Photography).

    The Fred Whitton Challenge is one of the most popular sportives in the UK and is also famed as being particularly difficult.     Appleby Horse Fair

    A traditional, informal gathering of Gypsies and Travellers - lively atmosphere with plenty to see - horses being washed in river, raced down street, stalls etc.  The Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers which takes place on the first week in June, from Thursday to the following Wednesday, but this is essentially a weekend event the main days being the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  The Horse Fair has taken place since the reign of James II, who granted a Royal charter in 1685 allowing a horse fair "near to the River Eden."  Appleby Fair is unique in Europe and, as well as attracting around 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, over 30,000 other visitors attend the Fair, with Sunday being the traditional main visitors’ day.  More information is available from Appleby TIC - 017683 51177 or via www.applebyfair.org**Please note: This is not an organised event.**  Visitors attend at their own risk.

    The Merchant of Venice - Live from the RSC

    The Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC) is continuing it’s collaboration with Picturehouse Entertainment in 2015 on ‘Live from Stratford-upon-Avon’, a programme to screen its productions live from Shakespeare’s hometown.  The Merchant of Venice will be directed by Polly Findlay, in her first Shakespeare production for the RSC.  Polly’s production of Arden of Faversham currently plays in the Swan Theatre as part of ‘The Roaring Girls’ season. She has directed Protest Song at The Shed at the National Theatre and will direct Treasure Island at the National Theatre at the end of 2014.  In the melting pot of Venice, trade is God.

    Brough Agricultural Show

    The Brough Agricultural Society is holding its 2015 Show on 20 August 2015 in the Show Field, Kaber, Kirkby Stephen.  The Show, a traditional one, has classes for Fell, Dales, Shetland, Piebald Coloured Ponies, Veteran Horses, Riding Ponies and Mounted Fancy Dress. Marathon and Obstacle Driving competitions are also held.  Sheep classes include Swaledale, Rough Fell, Blackfaced, Mule and Blue Faced Leicester, Texel, Herdwick, Beltex, Suffolk and Lleyn sheep together with a Young Handler competition which is a qualifier for the Cumbria Young Sheep Handler.  The Horticultural Classes are for Vegetables, Flowers, Floral Art, a Co-Operative Effort, Confectionery, Art Classes, Handicrafts and Photography.

    Known locally as the Fellside Royal', Dufton Agricultural Show, established in 1864, is one of Cumbria's longest running local shows.
