  • Plant and Food Fair

    Plant and Food Fair

    There are over 40 Northern Nurseries and Cumbrian Food Producers coming to the annual Plant and Food Fair at Hutton-in-the-Forest on 26th May.  As well as a strong showing of perennials, there will be a great range of specialist nurseries, including primula, rose, peony and rhododendron growers and a range of alpine, herb, tree and shrub nurseries.  After one of the longest winters it will be the perfect time to get planting!  There will also be a wide range of food stalls, all delicious, including locally reared meat, smoked fish, cheeses, breads, cakes, preserves and wine.  Shelagh Todd of Newton Rigg  will be talking about Container Growing and Kevin Caddy, Head Gardener, will be taking tours of the Garden.   Because everything is so late this year the tulips will still be in full bloom!   There will be a raffle in aid of Eden Valley Hospice, with prizes which include a collection of herbaceous plants from Hutton and a consultation with Kevin Caddy in the winner’s own garden.Talks in the Walled Garden: 12pm and 2pmGarden Tours: 1pm and 3pm with Kevin Caddy, Head Gardener at Hutton   The admission charge of just £5 - children free – includes access to the extensive gardens and grounds including the Walled Garden, terraces and topiary, Low Garden with its ponds and cascades and the Woodland Walk as well as talks from visiting experts and garden tours with Hutton’s own Head Gardener. Delicious lunches and refreshments are also on offer at the atmospheric Cloisters Tearoom.   Definitely one of the highlights of the season, Hutton-in-the-Forest Plant and Food Fair is a superb day out for all the family.

  • The Yomp Mountain Challenge

    The Yomp Mountain Challenge

    The Full Yomp Mountain Challenge involves a run, or walk, of  23 miles, traversing the beautiful Cumbrian fells in the Upper Eden Valley near Kirkby Stephen.  For those preferring a gentler aim, there are routes of 11.5 miles (Half Yomp) and 6.5 miles (Short Yomp).  The Yomp Mountain Challenge, formerly known as the Mallerstang  Horseshoe and Nine Standards Yomp, was established in 1983 by the Rotary Club of Upper Eden to commemorate the achievements of the British Forces engaged in the Falklands Campaign.  The 2013 event will be the 31st Yomp. The three Yomp routes make up an outdoor event which welcomes both fell walkers and runners.  The Full Yomp is a serious undertaking.  Walkers should aim to complete the circuit in under 9 hours, while at the other extreme fell runners will aspire to beat Carl Bell’s 2011 course record time of 2 hours 43 minutes.

    Appleby Horse Fair

    A traditional, informal gathering of gypsies and travellers - lively atmosphere with plenty to see - horses being washed in river, raced down street, stalls etc.  The Fair is an annual gathering of Gypsies and Travellers which takes place on the first week in June, from Thursday to the following Wednesday, but this is essentially a weekend event the main days being the Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  Appleby Fair is unique in Europe and, as well as attracting around 10,000 Gypsies and Travellers, over 30,000 other visitors attend the Fair, with Sunday being the traditional main visitors’ day.  **Please note: This is not an organised event.**  Visitors attend at their own risk.  More information is available from Appleby TIC - 017683 51177 or via www.applebyfair.org.

    A celebration of the fantastic forestry sector within Cumbria, featuring the UK Loggers annual competition, timber extraction demos, firewood processing, charcoal making, greenwood crafts, woodland and wood fuel advice, archery, activities for children and lots of great local food and drink!  Free admission.  The Forestry Festival will feature, as a main attraction, the annual UK Loggers Competition – http://ukloggers.co.uk/ The nationally-recognised logging competition will feature the felling of timber poles, which will then be moved around the site using various methods such as: Local horseloggers Forcat Skidder Oxtrac skidder Tractor and trailer winch Alstor 8×8 forwarder The timber will be delivered to a range of different machinery such as a Woodmizer sawmill, Truncator sawhorse, Cordmaster firewood processor, woodchipper and blowing machine and charcoal barrels. This will demonstrate the chain of harvesting a sustainable resource, through to the end uses of wood. The event will be widely promoted and we aim to attract, as the main audience, the forestry sector in and around Cumbria including our expansive database of woodland owners, forestry training participants, contractors and primary users of wood.

    Brough Agricultural Show

    The Brough Agricultural Society is holding its 125th Show on Thursday 15th August 2013 in the Show Field, Kaber, Kirkby Stephen.  The Show, a traditional one, has classes for Fell, Dales, Shetland, Piebald Coloured Ponies, Veteran Horses, Riding Ponies and Mounted Fancy Dress. Marathon and Obstacle Driving competitions are also held.  Sheep classes include Swaledale, Rough Fell, Blackfaced, Mule and Blue Faced Leicester, Texel, Herdwick, Beltex, Suffolk and Lleyn sheep together with a Young Handler competition which is a qualifier for the Cumbria Young Sheep Handler.  The Horticultural Classes are for Vegetables, Flowers, Floral Art, a Co-Operative Effort, Confectionery, Art Classes, Handicrafts and Photography.

    The Penrith Triathlon will take place on Sunday 25 August 2013, from Penrith Leisure Centre. The Penrith Triathlon is a British Triathlon registered sprint event which includes: 400m Swim - pool swim 23Km Cycle - on open roads 5Km Run - on adjacent fields The event is open to persons aged 18 years an over on race day, and in recent years has successfully involved beginners to the sport to more experienced athletes. The cost to enter the event is: £22 British Triathlon members £25 Non members On the day the competitors briefing will commence at 10am with the event starting from 10.40am onwards. However, I do recommend you check out the race route link before deciding.If you don't already know, the area is fabulous and well worth making a weekend visit for the race.  .

In addition to the exhibition there will feature a mini art trail through Rheged, alongside a programme of special events and hands on activities for seasoned art enthusiasts and young artists alike.  Supported by Arts Council England and developed in partnership with Cumbria Tourism, C-Art exists to promote the visual arts in Cumbria on a national scale, encouraging cultural visitors to the region and increasing artwork sales for both galleries and artists. The exhibition will run from 13th September 2012 – 10th November 2013 and is open to submissions from all C-Art 2013 participating artists.

    After a second hugely productive year in which 134 artists and independent galleries opened their studios to 11,500 visitors generating in excess of £76,000 in sales, planning is already in place for C-Art 2013 to highlight the best Cumbrian visual and applied arts in another two-week event this September.  Artists, designers, craftspeople and independent galleries based in Cumbria are able to sign up to be included in the 2013 Open Studios trail, which will run from 14 – 29 September 2013. The dedicated website www.c-art.org.uk and catalogue highlights all the studios and galleries opening their doors during the two-week period.
