  • 'Picture Kirkby’ - create an image of Kirkby Stephen in a day

    'Picture Kirkby’ - create an image of Kirkby Stephen in a day

    The first Picturing Kirkby Stephen art competition will take place on Saturday 29th June.   Artists are invited to create an original piece of artwork in one day based in and around the picturesque market town of Kirkby Stephen.  There is plenty of scope for a variety of subjects with: Fabulous fells, fields and footpaths.  Bubbling becks.  The river Eden.  Quaint architecture.  Historical artefacts. Pretty surrounding villages.  Historic Parish Church.  And a cattle market.  On the day artworks will be judged and there will be:  1st Prize of £350  2nd prize of £250  3rd prize of £150  Young artist prize £100  After judging artwork will go on display and for sale in The Parish Church for 2 weeks.  Visitors will be asked to vote for their favourite artwork.  A peoples prize of £100 will be awarded to the winner.   If you’re an artist - download the artist information, download and fill in the registration form.  Then enjoy a day of creating, competing for a prize and taking part in the exhibition.   If you’re not an artist join us for the day to see artists at work and enjoy everything this market town has to offer.   Many thanks to our sponsors for making this day possible.

    A Midsummer Night's Dream by Quantum Theatre

    Quantum Theatre comes to the Inner Bailey of Appleby Castle with a new adaptation of the classic Shakespeare play: A Midsummer Night's Dream.  All Quantum productions are written/adapted and directed by the Artistic Director, Michael Whitmore, whose work captures the essence and spirit of the original texts whilst presenting them in a fast-paced, tightly choreographed and highly entertaining style. He has written over thirty five plays including adaptations of classic texts and new work on the National Curriculm for Science, Maths and English and pieces on World War One, environmental issues and the Olympics.

    Appleby Agricultural Show

    The 2019 Appleby Agricultural Show will be holding their annual show on Hanging Shaw Fields on Thursday 8th August 2019 by kind permission of The Winter Family, Clickham Farm.  With close proximity to the A66, free parking and a free taxi service from the centre of Appleby the show is easily accessible.  We have a wide variety of classes for horses, sheep, poultry, vintage machinery, dogs, childrens pets, produce, handicrafts and horticultural exhibits. Equestrian classes include Veteran Horses and Ponies, Riding Horses, Fells, Dales, Shetlands and Coloured Horses, Working Hunter and Handy Pony.  In addition to the exhibits on show there are a variety of stands, a Craft and Food Hall.  With close proximity to the A66, free parking and a free taxi service from the centre of Appleby the show is easily accessible.  Appleby Show is a great day out for all the family, free entry for children under 16.

    Brough Agricultural Show

    The Brough Agricultural Society is holding its 2019 Show on on Thursday 15th August, so, put it in your diaries in the Show Field, Kaber, Kirkby Stephen.  The Show, a traditional one, has classes for Fell, Dales, Shetland, Piebald Coloured Ponies, Veteran Horses, Riding Ponies and Mounted Fancy Dress. Marathon and Obstacle Driving competitions are also held.  Sheep classes include Swaledale, Rough Fell, Blackfaced, Mule and Blue Faced Leicester, Texel, Herdwick, Beltex, Suffolk and Lleyn sheep together with a Young Handler competition which is a qualifier for the Cumbria Young Sheep Handler.  The Horticultural Classes are for Vegetables, Flowers, Floral Art, a Co-Operative Effort, Confectionery, Art Classes, Handicrafts and Photography.

    The Winter Droving

    The magical day of rural celebration, food, fun, games, masquerade and fire in Penrith…including a traditional Cumbrian market featuring local food and drink, and high quality arts and crafts.  There are rural games such as tug of war and hay bale racing to win the Drovers Cup, as well as fantastic array of street entertainment.  Then as night falls welcome the mystical masked procession…featuring fire, music, mayhem and animals aplenty.  The Winter Droving has quickly established itself as a key event in the Cumbrian calendar, attracting thousands of people from all over the north. There are lots of opportunities to join in (carry a torch in the procession or enter a team into the Drovers Cup) or to simply stand around gawping and feeding your face and maybe throw a few coconuts about!  Join the Herd for a spectacular celebration of winter and Penrith’s agricultural heritage – illuminating Penrith with fire, animation, music and merriment.  The Winter Droving takes place on Saturday 26 October 2019 in Penrith.  An Eden Arts Project.

    Appleby Horse Fair 2020

    A traditional, informal gathering of Gypsies and Travellers - lively atmosphere with plenty to see - horses being washed in river, raced down street, stalls etc.  Appleby Horse Fair takes place on the first week in June from Thursday to the following Wednesday, but it is essentially a weekend event with the main days being Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
