‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ exhibition of upcycled art and craft work

Location: The Old Courthouse, Shap, Penrith, CA10 3NL

Dates: 05 October 2019 - 27 October 2019

‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’ is the theme for a series of events and an exhibition taking place at The Old Courthouse, Shap from 5th - 27th October.  The aim is to highlight ways in which we can all live our lives more sustainably. The exhibition will showcase the talents of some living in Eden who create a variety of upcycled art and craft work including practical items and toys made from pallets and old furniture, decorative items from cutlery and pictures utilising recycled materials.

The first special event, a Repair Café, will take place on Sunday 6th October, 10am - 1pm in the Memorial Hall. "I'm very pleased that a first Repair Cafe is coming to Shap", says organiser Liz Kerrey. "I'm sure we've a wealth of talent here. Please come along to help if you have sewing or DIY skills. If there's enough interest, we can put the cafe on regularly."  For more details about this event  contact Chris tel. 01931 713240 or contact Liz on

The Another Way sculpture (picture) created by Michelle Castles of Dockray for the charity of the same name will be on display at the Old Courthouse. The sculpture embodies the ethos of everyone living a more sustainable lifestyle and depicts the move away from single use plastic and other waste.  Matterdale teenager, Amy Bray, founder of the charity will talk on Saturday 12th October sharing ideas on how we can bring about changes in society to prioritise the health of ourselves and our planet in the decisions that we make in response to the significant challenges our environment is facing today.

Over the course of the exhibition Judith Bradshaw, Waste Prevention Officer for Cumbria County Council, will deliver several events; a talk about what happens to the waste we produce in Cumbria, a daytime ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’ session and during half-term week a ‘Book folding and Bottletop art activity for families. There will be a Fairtrade afternoon with stalls and information and an opportunity for those with sewing skills to be involved in creating panels for a Fairtrade wall hanging project. A FREEGLE event will take place on Saturday 19th October and on Saturday 26th October Chloe Randall will lead a Compost and Wormery workshop.
