Steam Over Shap: Exhibition to mark the 175th anniversary of the commencement of construction of the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway

Opening Times: Open 1pm to 4pm each weekend in July and August and Bank Holiday Monday plus additional times from 10th August

This summer marks the 175th anniversary of the commencement of construction of the Lancaster and Carlisle Railway which began with the cutting of the first sod on Shap Fell in July 1844. Shap Summit standing at 916 feet above sea level is one of the most renowned points on the mainland rail network.  Several events are taking place in Shap to commemorate the coming of the railway which had a huge impact on the communities of Shap and Tebay.  

Shap Local History Society have an extensive railway archive at The Market Cross (open each weekend in July and August) that includes records, images, and recollections.  Shap Community CIO are staging an exhibition of railway art and photography in the gallery at The Old Courthouse from 10th August. This will feature work by past and present artists. Other special events in August include a model railway exhibition, talks and an evening of music and readings to celebrate the railway heritage of the area.  Visit www.theoldcourthouse.org for details.
